Mahalaxmi Resident Iqbal Kumar Urges CM Devendra Fadnavis to Introduce Alcohol Detection and Engine-Locking System in Vehicles

Mumbai: Mahalaxmi resident Iqbal Kumar has appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to consider introducing a mandatory alcohol detection and engine-locking system in vehicles to prevent drunk driving and help reduce road accidents.

Under the proposed system, vehicles would be equipped with an alcohol detection device capable of checking the driver's breath before the engine is started. If the system detects alcohol levels above the legally permitted limit, the vehicle's engine would automatically remain locked, preventing the driver from operating the vehicle.

Kumar has suggested that the Maharashtra government work jointly with automobile manufacturers and technology companies to develop and implement such systems in new vehicles, while also exploring the feasibility of installing the technology in existing vehicles.

According to the proposal, an alcohol detection and engine-locking system could offer several road-safety benefits, including:

Preventing drunk driving: Vehicles would be prevented from starting if the driver's alcohol level exceeds the permitted limit.

Saving lives: The system could help reduce accidents caused by impaired driving and protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

Improving road safety: The technology would serve as a preventive measure, complementing police enforcement and existing road-safety regulations.

Reducing fatalities and serious injuries: Preventing intoxicated individuals from driving could help reduce the number and severity of alcohol-related road crashes.

Increasing accountability: Drivers may be discouraged from driving after consuming alcohol when the vehicle itself prevents operation.

Protecting families and road users: The system could help prevent dangerous decisions that put passengers, families and members of the public at risk.

The appeal urges Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to examine the proposal and consider framing a policy in consultation with automobile manufacturers, road-safety experts, transport authorities and technology providers.

Iqbal Kumar said that combining technology with enforcement could provide an additional layer of protection against drunk driving and contribute to making Maharashtra's roads safer.
