Mahim Social Worker Irfan Machiwala Urges Global Ban on Alcohol in Airplanes Following Spike in In-Flight Misconduct
Mumbai, April 10, 2025 – Social worker Irfan Machiwala from Mahim, Mumbai, suggest all governments and international airlines to implement a complete ban on alcohol in airplanes, citing a disturbing rise in incidents of passengers urinating on board after consuming alcohol.
Machiwala expressed deep concern over the growing trend of unruly behavior in the skies, often triggered by in-flight alcohol consumption. “It’s becoming a global embarrassment. We’ve seen multiple cases where intoxicated passengers lose control and engage in shameful acts, compromising the dignity and safety of fellow travelers,” he stated.
He outlined several key benefits of banning alcohol on flights:
1. Improved Passenger Safety: Alcohol can cause aggressive or erratic behavior. Removing it from flights would significantly reduce the risk of mid-air altercations and assaults.
2. Reduced Crew Stress: Flight attendants routinely manage intoxicated passengers. A ban would allow them to focus more on ensuring passenger safety and delivering better service.
3. Healthier In-Flight Environment: Alcohol affects the body differently at high altitudes. Eliminating it can help passengers stay hydrated and reduce discomfort or illness during the journey.
4. Fewer Medical Emergencies: Dehydration, anxiety, and heart complications exacerbated by alcohol are frequent causes of in-flight medical incidents.
5. Cleaner Aircraft Cabins: With less spillage and fewer accidents, aircraft interiors would stay cleaner, leading to quicker turnaround times and better hygiene.
6. Cost Savings for Airlines: Airlines could reduce costs on stocking, serving, and dealing with legal liabilities stemming from alcohol-induced issues.
7. Smoother Immigration Process: Passengers arriving sober are less likely to cause trouble at customs or immigration, easing the burden on airport security personnel.
Machiwala emphasized that the skies should remain a safe and respectful space for all. “Flying is a shared experience, and it must be treated with responsibility. Banning alcohol is a simple step with far-reaching positive impact,” he concluded.
