For the Dharavi Rehabilitation Project, land measurement officers from the municipal authority arrived in Aksa village, Malad West, to conduct a survey. However, under the leadership of MLA Aslam Shaikh, local villagers united and drove them away. The villagers appeared highly agitated during the incident. Although a notice had been given for the land survey to begin at 9:30 AM, the officials started their work at 6:00 AM with heavy police presence, keeping the villagers in the dark. This sparked anger among the locals.
Led by MLA Aslam Shaikh, the villagers blocked the Madh-Marve road for some time. Aslam Shaikh took a firm stance, declaring, “Under no circumstances will the lands belonging to the sons of the soil be handed over to Adani.” A verbal confrontation also ensued between Shaikh and the police. Subsequently, Shaikh, accompanied by the villagers, marched to the Malwani Police Station.
Shaikh demanded the cancellation of the survey, asserting that no survey would be allowed without the consent of the villagers. He warned that land measurement officer Ranjit Desai would not be allowed to leave unless this demand was met. This led to significant tension outside the Malwani Police Station.
The villagers raised objections to the survey, citing ongoing legal disputes between the Shri Mukteshwar Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society and the state government regarding certain parcels of land. Despite clear court orders prohibiting any action on the disputed lands, the officials carried out the survey. This provoked strong opposition from the villagers, who cornered the officers on this matter.
Ultimately, the municipal land measurement officers agreed to provide a written assurance that no land measurement had been conducted, which helped pacify the villagers.
