A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday near Mumbai when a ferry boat carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to the Elephanta Caves capsized near Elephanta Island. The accident happened after a Navy vessel collided with a passenger ferry named Neelkamal around 3:55 PM.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed during a briefing that 101 passengers were rescued, but unfortunately, 13 lives were lost. The collision between the defence vessel and the ferry caused the accident.
Elephanta Island, located off the coast of Mumbai, is home to the famous Gharapuri Caves, a popular tourist attraction. Following the incident, the Coast Guard and Navy launched search and rescue operations in the area.
According to Coast Guard Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, the Coast Guard was alerted about the incident by the Harbour Master of the Mumbai Port Authority. Ships were immediately deployed to search for survivors, and the rescue operations began shortly after the accident, which occurred around 4 PM.
